The 51st Anniversary of the Beach Buggy

in association with:

May   3rd / 4th   2015    -    Kenilworth Showground, Warwickshire, CV8 2LZ

And we have another mission !!

So what`s this all about then?
As you probably know by now, way back in 1964, in a tiny shed just outside of Newport Beach, a guy called Bruce Meyers had himself a little project.

Based on a fibreglass monocoque body with a Beetle engine, transmission and suspension bolted to it, not only was the Dune Buggy born, but so was a complete industry, when the Meyers Manx went into production.

Initially, Meyers hoped to sell 20 or 30 (then priced at $985) just to cover the cost of the project, but instead, he would receive more orders than he could fill. In order to make the buggies easier to manufacture and more affordable, the Manx body was redesigned to bolt onto a shortened VW floor pan and therefore utilising the front seats, suspension, beam, wheels, transmission and engine that were already attached.

The Magazines like Hot Rod and Car & Driver featured the fiberglass car on their covers, and they took the country by storm. And the rest, as they say, is History.

We have another mission !!
Can we do it AGAIN?

Knowing that the Meyers Manx had indeed been the inspiration behind a whole phenomenon of Beach Buggies and derivitives, back in 2014 we decided to get together for a 50th Birthday Celebration. My initial aim was to get 50 Buggies to celebrate a 50th anniversary, and when I put the call out, you all came in your droves. Not only did we achieve the 50 cars (within 1 hour of the gate opening) but this gathering exceeded all expectations as we achieved a new UK record with 108 Buggies in attendance. As everybody left, after having such a good weekend, it was decided that we should make this a regular event on the Buggy calendar. So the gaunlet has been thrown - we have 108 cars to beat!!

For those who have never been, located in the heart of the UK, the National Kit Car Show, more affectionately known as "Stoneleigh" is the world’s largest Kit Car Show which offers a unique opportunity to see more Kit Cars in one place than at any other event on the planet. Here you have the opportunity to meet the manufacturers and see the great displays from all of the industry’s major players. Inside Stoneleigh’s extensive exhibition hall complex you will find hundreds of stands, selling everything a car builder needs, from nuts and bolts to a complete performance engine. Outside of the halls at Stoneleigh you will find hundreds of club stands with over 4000 privately owned kit cars on display. If there was a kit made, then there will almost certainly be a Club to support it! Outside, you will find the accessory stands, and also plenty of action for you to enjoy with the Slalom Experience where you can take a passenger seat for the drift of your life, or for the rather muddier action, you can go to the Dakar 4-wheel drive circuit, where the whole family can enjoy a great experience.

Our Mission is to do it all over again:

How many Beach Buggies
Can we can gather together in a line up
on Sunday May 3rd 2015 at 2pm ?

Saturday May 2nd
The Saturday is not officially a show day, but the gates will be open from around 10:00am for those that want to arrive early and pitch up camp. There are quite a few of us heading down to make a really full weekend of it and it would be good to see you there.

Subject to advance notification of numbers attending, we may even go for a little cruise about later in the afternoon.
Sunday May 3rd
Today is the official opening day of the event, and we would like as many of you to come along with your Buggies and join us for the official count which will take place at around 2 O`Clock where we then will see just how many Buggies, Baja`s and Rails we have managed to get together in one place. If you have not yet got a Buggy, then come along and join us anyway, as we will still need someone to do the dirty work and clean the cars ready for the photo`s !!

And once the day draws to a close, don`t think for one minute that it is over, as we will then head over to the bar for a few beers and the Free evening entertainment with Live Music Night, sponsored by Complete Kit Car Magazine.
Monday May 4th
Probably waking up with a "mahoosive" hangover and enjoying the rest of the show whilst rummaging through the trade stands.

Help Desperately needed !!

We have a date, we have a venue, we have a mission - but thats not enough.

The ground work has been done, but from here on in, I really need some help with what we do next, any entertainments over the weekend, marshalling, promotion, contacts with trade press, photographers, media interest, facebook promotion, etc etc. A major event like this needs significant input and some organising, so if you are able to contribute in any way, no matter how small, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me.

Frequently Asked Questions:

I`m not currently a Buggy Club Member - Can I still come along?
Of course, this event is open to all Beach Buggy Enthusiasts all over the world, and you are more than welcome to join with us. The more the merrier.

I don`t currently have a Buggy - Can I still come along?
By all means, come and see what the fun is all about. But I warn you now, its addictive, and if you turn up to the show without a Buggy, I cannot promise that you won`t be frantically searching for your own one by the time the weekend is over.

I don`t think my car is good enough to display?
Lets dispell a common myth here as not all displays are about chrome and polish. We are looking to celebrate how much fun we have had with our cars since Bruce started the ball rolling. The daily drivers that are a bit rough, the off roaders that are covered in mud and dents, and of course the shiny trailer queens, all go to show that there are many different aspects to our vehicles and we all have just as much pleasure with them. That is what we are celebrating here - 51 years of Fun !!

Can I just turn up for the day?
Of course, but remember our target is to get as many cars there for 2pm on the Sunday as we can, so if you are only planning to come across for a quick visit, 2pm on Sunday would be a good time to aim for.

How do I find out more?
As details are finalised, they will be posted on here, but there are always chat rooms and discussions taking place on the online forums shown above, so why not register now and help us to shape this event, as we are always looking for any help, suggestions or improvements as we go along.
